Few items change the way you play Minecraft as dramatically as the Elytra. Once you strap this pair of dragon-wing-like membranes to your back, walking and boat rides start to feel like a thing of the past. If you've never used one before, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know: where to find it, how to repair it, and how to actually fly with style.
What Is an Elytra?
The Elytra is a chest-slot item that lets you glide through the air. Instead of falling straight down when you jump off a cliff, wearing an Elytra turns your fall into a smooth, controllable glide. Combine it with Firework Rockets and you get full-blown propelled flight — easily the fastest way to travel in Survival mode without cheats.
Where to Find an Elytra
The Elytra can only be obtained in one specific location: End Ships. These small wrecked ships spawn floating on the outer islands of the End dimension, out beyond the main island where you fight the Ender Dragon.
Here's how to get there:
- Defeat the Ender Dragon first. Killing the dragon spawns an exit portal in the middle of the main End island, along with an End Gateway.
- Build an Ender Pearl stockpile. You'll need several Ender Pearls (farm them from Endermen) to throw yourself through the End Gateway and reach the outer islands.
- Explore outer End islands. Outer islands often contain End Cities — tall purpur-block towers guarded by Shulkers.
- Look for an End Ship. Not every End City has one, but many do. It's usually a diagonal ship-like structure extending from a floating platform, sometimes suspended over open void.
- Grab the Elytra carefully. The Elytra sits on an item frame at the front of the ship, usually guarded by a Shulker. Deal with the Shulker first (their levitation attack can knock you into the void), then grab the Elytra.
Pro tip: bring blocks to bridge gaps and a few golden apples in case a Shulker catches you off guard.
Repairing and Maintaining Your Elytra
The Elytra takes durability damage every time you glide, and once it hits zero, it breaks. You have two ways to repair it:
- Phantom Membranes. Phantoms drop these when killed, and you can combine two Elytra (or an Elytra and membranes) in an anvil to restore durability.
- Mending enchantment. If you enchant your Elytra with Mending, it automatically repairs itself using experience orbs you collect. This is by far the most convenient long-term solution, since you never have to hunt Phantoms again.
Combining both is common: use Mending for passive repair, and keep a few membranes on hand just in case.
How to Fly With an Elytra
Flying takes a bit of practice. Here's the basic technique:
- Equip the Elytra in your chestplate slot.
- Jump off a high point (a mountain, tower, or even just a few blocks with a running start).
- Press the jump key while falling to open the Elytra and start gliding.
- Use Firework Rockets to boost forward. Right-click (or use your firework hotkey) while gliding to get a burst of speed and altitude.
Higher-tier fireworks with more gunpowder give a longer, stronger boost. Many players carry a full stack of basic fireworks (one gunpowder, no stars needed) for everyday travel.
Tips for Elytra Travel
- Watch your durability bar. Nothing ruins a trip like your Elytra breaking mid-flight over lava or the void.
- Fly with a full hunger bar. Gliding and boosting consume hunger, so keep food on hand.
- Combine with a Trident for underwater launches. A Trident enchanted with Riptide lets you launch off water, which pairs nicely with Elytra flight near oceans.
- Build launch towers. A simple obsidian or stone tower near your base gives you a quick launch point any time you want to travel.
- Avoid flying through caves. Elytra flight works best in open skies — tight spaces make crashes far more likely.
Why the Elytra Changes Everything
Once you have a reliable Elytra setup, exploring becomes a joy instead of a chore. Long overworld journeys that used to take in-game hours on foot or horseback can be covered in minutes. It also opens up new possibilities for base design — floating islands, mountain-top builds, and sky bases become fully practical once you can glide home instead of climbing.
Getting your first Elytra is a genuine milestone in any Survival playthrough. It requires beating the Ender Dragon, navigating the dangerous End islands, and surviving a Shulker encounter — but the payoff, effortless flight across your entire world, is more than worth the trip.
